Top Ten Dental Hygiene Tips

Tooth maintenance is a highly important part of daily life. Here are ten dental hygiene tips that will hopefully go a way to ensuring you can be proud of what’s inside your mouth.

1) Make sure that you eat well

This is probably, somewhat of an obvious one, but still very important. As much as we all love our sweets and treats and our fizzy drinks, it’s important to keep them to a minimum. You’ve probably seen example demonstrations of the damage coca-cola can cause.

2) Always brush your teeth regularly

Ideally you should probably brush them between meals, and before you go to bed. Some dentists even advise brushing them before breakfast, though I disagree here as it has a very detrimental effect on the quality of breakfast. When brushing, make sure you give your teeth a thorough brush-it should take you about two minutes.

3) Use Mouthwash

Use mouthwash as a final flourish to make your teeth and gums that little bit more healthy.

4) Visit your dentist regularly

It’s recommended that you pay them a visit once every six months. Of course, nobody likes the dentist. The waiting rooms always seem incredibly dull and dreary and you have the worry that they’ll tell you you need a filling and need an injection which nobody really likes. However, it will be a lot worse for you if you go when the damage to your teeth has already been done and you probably need more than just a routine filling. Like the saying goes, a stitch in time saves nine. Or in this case, a filling in time.

5) Change your toothbrush or toothbrush head regularly

You should change your toothbrush around once every two to three months. Not changing your toothbrush regularly will cause bacteria to collect on the bristles and transfer back into your mouth. It will also cause the bristles to become soft and lose their effectiveness.

6) Clean your tongue by using a tongue scraper each morning

This will remove tongue plaque as well as freshen your breath. This is more effective than brushing your tongue using a toothbrush.

7) Use water jets

Water jets, also known as oral irrigators are devices which involve pressurised streams of water being blasted from the device to remove plaque in areas that can’t be reached by brushing alone. Research has shown that using a water jet alongside daily brushing will remove 99% more plaque than via just brushing. You’ve probably had a water jet used on you when visiting a dentist.

8) Avoid a dry mouth

It’s important to have a healthy amount of saliva in your mouth or dental problems can occur, as saliva provides a highly effective defence against tooth decay and periodontal disease. If you suffer from dry mouth, there are a number of effective products that can be of aid to you.

9) Use an electric toothbrush

Many dentists recommend using an electric toothbrush as they tend to have a superior performance in comparison with manual brushing and are faster and more efficient in cleaning the vital areas.

10) Dental floss

Finally, floss regularly after brushing. Most problems arise from the areas between your teeth and flossing ensures you can get to those areas. It’s also very useful for getting out bits of food that have become stuck between your teeth.
Follow these tips and you should have teeth that you can be proud of.
